Green-fingered pupils at Burtonwood Community Primary School have put their hard work and dedication to the test to achieve Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recognition in their school garden.

The Eco Council has been given the RHS School Gardening Award – Level One, which means pupils could demonstrate they understand the benefits of gardening and have made their green space accessible for everyone.

To apply to the RHS, the school had to show that they had met a number of different criteria by explaining what had been taking place at the school and that at least 10 pupils had been involved.

For completing level one, the school has now been given a certificate as well as a copy of the book Your Wellbeing Garden and a selection of seeds to help them continue to grow.

School gardening projects help to give children a connection with nature which can improve emotional as well as physical wellbeing by increasing activity and encouraging young people to eat more fruit and vegetables.

The journey to achieve Level One, has also encouraged the children to work together and achieve a shared goal, while building life skills such as teamwork, resilience and confidence.

As part of their work on the garden, the children have also been learning about the environment and the importance of biodiversity and sustainability.

A huge thank you to all our wonderful young gardeners whose hard work and enthusiasm helped the school earn this fantastic recognition. Dedication and hard work has helped to create a beautiful garden for the whole school community to enjoy.
