With the start of exam season at our schools, we are taking the opportunity to share some helpful tips on managing anxiety as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.
The Mental Health Foundation has been leading Mental Health Awareness Week since 2001 to bring the UK together to focus on achieving good mental health. This year, the week takes place from 12 to 18 May 2025, with the theme 'Community'.
Embracing this theme, Great Sankey High School has been sharing information about services available to children and young people across the community in Warrington and beyond. They have also been offering exam anxiety tips and encouraging parents to access resources on the Kooth website.
In our primary schools, Year 6 children are already in the middle of their SATs exams. Many schools have introduced breakfast clubs to help pupils settle into school, spend time with friends, and begin their day with a nutritious meal.
To help those sitting exams or preparing for them, here are some tips to help manage anxiety:
- Make time for things you enjoy, such as listening to music, cooking, drawing, or going for a walk.
- Talk to others about how you feel—connect with your friends and look to your family for support.
- Take regular breaks and be realistic about what you can do in a day.
- Take care of your physical health by getting enough sleep, nutritious food, water, and exercise.
There are also a number of places to visit if you need help:
- Young Minds offers a 24/7 crisis messenger. Text YM to 85258 for free, confidential help.
- Youth in Mind is a free, discreet drop-in service for young people aged 7–19 at Warrington Youth Zone. No appointment or membership is required.
- Kooth provides online counselling, discussion boards, self-help tools, journals, and more.
- BBC Bitesize also offers free national advice and guidance.
If you or your child are feeling anxious during exams, please remember support is available - both in school and in the wider community.
Mental Health Awareness Week is a valuable opportunity to remind our students that support is always available, especially during the pressure of exams. By focusing on community and wellbeing, we’re helping young people build the resilience they need both now and in the future.
