April is World Autism Acceptance Month. It is an opportunity to come together, raise awareness, and foster acceptance.

Omega Multi Academy Trust and our schools are proud to participate in World Autism Acceptance and Awareness Month. During this month we will help promote awareness and understanding of autism and neurodiversity.  We have a range of resources below for professionals, parents and carers and children and young people.  Information on this page has been taken from the Autism Education Trust

Autism is not a medical condition.  Instead, autism is a processing difference that can have an impact on many areas of a person's life.

People with autism will experience difference in three key areas:

  • Sensory Processing and Imagination
  • Flexibility, Information Processing and Understanding
  • Social Understanding and Communication

While people with autism share similar characteristics to some degree, they are also all different from each other. This is because autism is considered a spectrum. The autism spectrum is not linear from 'high' to 'low' but varies in every way that one person might vary from another.

Over the years there have been a lot of changes and differences to how people talk about and understand autism.  In a world where people with autism face many barriers, it is crucial we make a conscious effort to talk about, and raise awareness of autism, in a positive way.  Language is a powerful means of shaping how people view and think about autism.  It can have a huge impact on the way we behave towards and support people with autism.

In 2023, the National Autistic Society published an Education Report which highlights that only 1 in 4 autistic people feel happy in school.  The findings of the report indicate that:
