Chapelford Village Primary School celebrated Lunar New Year with a number of fun activities across all year groups.
As part of the festivities, Chapelford Village Primary School hosted a Chinese Dragon Dance Workshop. Every child from Reception to Year 6 had the opportunity to collaborate with classmates to manoeuvre the magnificent dragon puppet through the school hall.
The children worked together to bring the dragon to life, performing a beautifully choreographed dance with the help of brightly coloured props.
During the week of activities all year groups participated in arts and crafts inspired by traditional Chinese decorations. Children created snakes, lanterns, and red envelopes—each symbolizing good fortune and new beginnings. Some year groups also practiced writing in Cantonese.
Parents also volunteered their time to speak with the children about the significance of the Lunar New Year. They shared personal experiences of celebrating the festive season and explained customs such as wearing new clothes, cleaning the house to welcome blessings, and decorating with red and gold to ward off bad spirits. The children learned about the tradition of giving red envelopes filled with money to wish others prosperity.
Children in Early Years also enjoyed an afternoon learning about Lunar New Year. They began by listening to the story of the Great Race, which explains the origins of the Chinese Zodiac. They then participated in an activity where they mimicked the movements of the zodiac animals, inviting their friends to guess which animal they represented. During the week they also crafted their own Chinese decorations, practiced using chopsticks and even tried writing some numbers.
What a great week of celebrations!
