Students return from adventure of a lifetime

Students from Great Sankey High School got the ultimate chance to take their learning outside the classroom during a trip of a lifetime.
The Year 11 and Barrow Hall College Geography students explored Iceland during the half term break, getting the chance to experience a full range of weather conditions from radiant sunshine to full gales.
As part of the trip, the students explored some of the breath-taking views and historic sites around Iceland including standing between the North American and Eurasian plates, learning about the myth of Gunna at Gunnahver and the Secret Lagoon.
A big part of the trip was hiking to the Sólheimajökull glacier where they then climbed to the plateau over the Katla volcano and learnt about how it is retreating. Students tasted the fresh ice and even did press ups before descending back to the coach.
On the return journey students stopped at the rainbow topped Skógafoss waterfall and climbed 495 steps to the viewing platform before walking behind the Seljalandsfoss falls.
They drove past Ejyafjallajokull and learnt about the eruption in 2010 which grounded planes across the world, visited the steps where Reagan met Gorbachev in 1986 and saw Yoko’s light of peace as well as section of the Berlin Wall before returning home.
The trip provided students with the chance to learn about new places, as well as learning about changing landscapes and important moments in history.
Parents thanked teachers for giving the students a fantastic experience that they will remember for a very long time and described it as a trip of a lifetime.
